Sony is not the only console maker having trouble, it seems. Microsoft is going to be eliminating many jobs in the early part of 2009, to cut costs. As many as 15,000 of its 90,000 strong workforce is under threat at this point, according to a mish mash of reports from the last few days. That adds up to between 12-17 percent of the total MS workers that may get the axe come January 15. 2009 is really starting off with a bang. The cuts are mostly expected in the Middle East, Europe, and Africa region, as well as the MSN department. Fortunately, the prevailing thought is that the games department should remain unaffected.

A spokesperson for Resolve, the company called in to deal with the Free Radical closure, has confirmed that the developer is indeed closed for now, but that the employees have been paid up until the end of December. The company was placed into administration, which is the UK's version of bankruptcy. In an update, though, GI said that 40 or so workers will remain at FR to work on game concepts.

Another developer has apparently closed its doors. Free Radical, the people behind Timesplitters and Star Wars Battlefront, have apparently shut down operations. Workers showed up to work today to find locked doors, and a note to meet at a nearby hotel. The team's Star Wars Battlefront III project has apparently been moved to Rebellion, the developer of the PSP Battlefront game. This trend is certainly alarming.

LOTR Online developer Turbine has added its name to the list of studios that have cut jobs from their staff roll. At both the Massachusetts and California locations, employees were let go. This is a disturbing trend that seems to be affecting even the most successful developers. If this is not a sign of the economic times, we don't know what is.
